Interior Decorating Career

The decision to have an interior decorating career could be a very satisfying and rewarding choice. A career in this field has stood the test of time, despite information, hints and tips available on the internet, as many people who might have access to this, still prefer the human interaction when considering embarking on an interior decorating project or not.

An interior decorating career addresses your own needs for self-actualisation, and through consultation with your customers, you can provide immediate feedback and suggestions. This ability for immediate creative gratification is not possible through the printed media or internet – despite the latter’s attempts by asking for feedback and comments through blogs.

There is however a responsibility that comes with this career choice. Interior decorating taste is very personal and differs from one person to the next. It is your responsibility as an interior decorator to listen to your customer’s brief and what they would like to achieve and marry their vision with what is practical, somewhat trendy and whether it will fit into the overall interior decorating style of the rest of their home. It will be unusual and definitely eccentric to find a customer whose home is decorated in a rustic country style, yet would like to have – for example – a dining area redecorated in elements of a 1960’s diner. It is important to deliver to the customer’s expectations, but similarly as the specialist, one should also probe and try to obtain the motivational reasoning behind such a vision. Your challenge will then be to create this vision, but ensure it fits into the overall interior decorating style, but incorporating some design elements from the adjacent rooms, as to soften the harsh change over. This is an extreme example, but could still be an exciting creative journey with your customer. You need to remind yourself that your customer needs to live daily on this room, at the end of the project.

Through your career in interior decorating you will most definitely meet a range of extraordinary people and in the process learn and experience more than what your already creative mind could have imagined.

You can prepare for a career in interior decorating by studying one of the courses through the Learning Group’s Decor School.
