Interior Decorating Jobs

Interior decorating jobs could cover a wide variety of fields from being full-time employed by and interior decorator, or self-employed or even freelancing. Traditionally interior decorating referred to homes or hotels, but nowadays this creative field includes corporations and even the film industry.

Many hotel chains employee their own full-time interior decoration staff, who looks after foyers, reception areas and obviously also the subtle décor touches in each room. The ultimate in job satisfaction would be to decorate the suites and penthouses in the hotel, as they allow for bigger budgets and more décor elements.

Big corporations employ architects to design and oversee construction of their head/regional offices, but rely on interior decorators to ensure their reception and public areas are inviting and representative of the values of the organisation. One might even be invited to consult on their various board- and meeting rooms on how to keep their interiors modern and relevant.

Interior decorators in the film industry are called set decorators. This is a very fast paced and energetic industry to work in. A set decorator will typically receive a brief from the director and producer on what the essence of the specific set is, in which time period or style the set need to be decorated and to ensure it looks believable and realistic. If you receive a brief to decorate a modern kitchen (remember you normally start with an empty stage), it must look and feel realistic as the actors move in and out of the scene – down to the detail of the curtains and wall clock. Employment in the film industry is normally on contract basis for as long as the production (“shooting”) of the film takes place.
